A Study on the Identity of "Chengdan (Chong) Sikou" as Seen in Bamboo and Wooden Slips

Abstract: There were convicts called "Chengdan Sikou" and "Chong Sikou" recorded in the Qin bamboo slips. Scholars have two main views on defining the identity of "Chengdan (Chong) Sikou": one holds that it refers to those with the status of Sikou; the other argues that their identity is Chengdan Chong. By comparing and analyzing the relevant records in bamboo and wooden slips, this paper elaborates on their identity from the aspects of clothing and food regulations, legal punishments, and labor records of "Chengdan (Chong) Sikou". This paper concludes that "Chengdan (Chong) Sikou" were close to the convicts of Chengdan Chong—they performed the labor service of Sikou after their Chengdan Chong punishment was commuted, but their identity was not completely equivalent to that of Chengdan Chong convicts. Both the expressions "one Chengdan Sikou" and "one Chengdan, Sikou" in the slips refer to one person with the identity of "Chengdan Sikou".
