Abstract: This paper examines the theoretical construction and practical connotations of Yan Zhenheng’s theory of xingqing (nature and emotion) against the intellectual backdrop of the Huxiang region in the late Qing Dynasty, where the revival of Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucianism intertwined with the intellectual trend of jingshi zhiyong (statecraft pragmatism). Yan Zhenheng holds that emotions must be rooted in heavenly principle (tianli), and achieve moral elevation through the cultivation practices of upholding reverence and exhausting principle (zhu jing qiong li). He regards "emotion" as the pivotal nexus connecting the metaphysical Dao and the concrete realm of literary expression, thus turning literary composition into an ethical practice that carries the Dao, illuminates principle and restrains emotion. Through close textual reading, this paper reveals how Yan, by virtue of the mechanism of "unity of emotion and principle", transforms individual private sentiments into public moral virtues. It thereby manifests the intellectual endeavors of local scholars in the late Qing Dynasty to reconstruct moral order and cultural identity amid the crisis of values.
