Abstract: Taking two types of online address terms—“xiaojiejie” and “xiaonüzi”—as the starting point, this study conducts an in-depth investigation into the usage logic of address terms and interpersonal strategies adopted by contemporary college students in their communication practices. Empirical findings show that, on the one hand, college students strategically leverage the approachable image associated with “xiaojiejie” to quickly establish social connections. On the other hand, they carry out modern parody and reconstruction of the traditional address term “xiaonüzi”, transforming it into a strategic expression for gaining an advantage by appearing to concede. In doing so, they construct a new model of interpersonal interaction based on “strategic consensus”, which embodies their communication wisdom of skillfully employing cultural symbols for identity management. Meanwhile, it also reflects the modern predicament predicament of modernity where emotional performativity and structural constraints coexist.
