A Study of Translator's Subjectivity in the Chinese Version of Yenan in June 1937: Talks with the Communist Leaders from the Perspective of Recontextualization

Abstract: Yenan in June 1937: Talks with the Communist Leaders has been widely acknowledged in academia for its significant value in CPC history studies, yet in-depth translation research on its Chinese version remains insufficient. In light of this, this paper adopts the recontextualization perspective in translation studies, and systematically examines the evolution trajectory, driving mechanisms and manifestations of translator's subjectivity in the process of contextual reconstruction of the Chinese translation. The study indicates that the recontextualization process of the translated version is jointly driven by three factors: translation purpose, reader reception, and the discourse of the times. Translator Li Yan gives full play to her subjectivity across three dimensions: text selection, paratext construction, and selection of translation strategies. By employing such strategies as title simplification, standardization of political terms and discourse adjustment, she accomplishes the meaning reconstruction of the source text in the context of the New Era. From an interdisciplinary perspective, this paper broadens the research horizon of CPC history studies and provides a typical case for the back-translation of red documents in the New Era.
