Abstract: Taking the typology of relative clauses as its research focus, this paper investigates the typological systems and features of relative clauses in Chinese and Kazakh, two languages with distinct linguistic and cultural backgrounds. As an analytic language, Chinese is dominated by preposed relative clauses, mainly adopting the gap strategy and pronominal retention strategy. This, to a certain extent, reflects the linguistic and cultural attributes of Chinese, which emphasizes the functional role of word order and semantic expression. Postposed relative clauses also occur in Chinese, demonstrating the flexibility and diversity of its expressive system. As an SOV language, Kazakh features unique morphological inflections and follows the postposed relative clause pattern. Such a typological system is closely associated with the linguistic structure and cultural context of the Kazakh language. The relative clause types in both languages align with the characteristics of their respective typological systems, with Chinese exhibiting more distinctive particularities.
